What Water Treatment Does My Pond Actually Need?

If you've been browsing pond water treatments and found yourself more confused than when you started, you're not alone. There are a lot of products out there, and it's not always clear what each one does, whether you actually need it, or how they work together.

This guide cuts through it. Here's what each Aquascape water treatment does, who it's for, and how to choose the right one for your feature.

First - Why Water Treatment Matters

A healthy pond or water feature relies on a living colony of beneficial bacteria to break down fish waste, organic debris, and excess nutrients. Without enough bacteria working consistently, you get green water, algae, sludge buildup, and poor water quality.

Water treatment isn't about adding harsh chemicals - it's about supporting the natural biology that keeps your feature clear and healthy. The Aquascape range is built around this principle. Every product is safe for fish, plants, and wildlife (with one noted exception covered below), and designed to work with your pond's ecosystem rather than against it.

The Two Systems - SL Auto-Dosing vs Standard Pump Bottles

Before getting into the individual products, it's worth understanding the two formats the Aquascape treatment range comes in.

SL Auto-Dosing (946ml)
The SL range is specifically formulated for use with the Aquascape Automatic Dosing System SL. The dosing system delivers a precise micro-dose of treatment into your feature twice daily, automatically. Small, consistent doses applied daily are significantly more effective than larger doses added manually every week or two. If your Southern Waterscapes build includes an auto-dosing system, the SL range is what you use.

Standard Pump Bottles (473ml)
For pond owners without an auto-dosing system, the standard 473ml pump bottle range allows you to dose manually. One pump per 378L of water, added regularly. Available for the core pond treatment range.

Ecosystem Pond Treatments

Maintain for Ponds

Your baseline product. Maintain for Ponds is the treatment you run day-to-day to keep your pond performing well - it's not a fix for a specific problem, it's ongoing support for your pond's biological balance.

It contains a powerful multi-formulation blend - beneficial bacteria, phosphate binder, flocculant, and pond detoxifier - so you're not having to add multiple separate products. It keeps water clear, supports the bacteria colony, and binds excess phosphates that would otherwise fuel algae growth.

Available as: Maintain for Ponds SL 946ml (auto-dosing) | Maintain for Ponds 473ml (pump bottle)

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes

Clean for Ponds

When your pond needs more active attention - sludge building up on the bottom, water looking murky, organic waste accumulating - Clean for Ponds is the treatment to switch to. It uses concentrated beneficial bacteria and enzymes to break down fish waste, decaying plant matter, and organic debris naturally.

Think of it as a deeper clean than Maintain. Once the pond is back in good shape, switch back to Maintain for ongoing maintenance.

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes

Clear for Ponds

If your pond water is cloudy, green, or struggling with algae - Clear for Ponds is the targeted treatment. It uses a fast-acting flocculant to bind fine suspended particles and algae, allowing your filter to remove them and restoring water clarity.

It's not an ongoing treatment - it's what you reach for when clarity is the specific issue. Once the water clears, return to Maintain for regular maintenance.

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes

Rapid Clear Flocculant

A standalone fast-acting flocculant for when you need results quickly. Where Clear for Ponds works gradually through the dosing system, Rapid Clear is a one-off treatment that clears cloudy or green pond water within hours by binding suspended particles so your filter can remove them rapidly.

Good to have on hand for a quick fix when you need it.

Available as: Rapid Clear Flocculant 473ml (pump bottle)

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

Pond Sludge Remover

Over time, organic material settles on the bottom of your pond and forms sludge - fish waste, leaf debris, uneaten food. Left unchecked it affects water quality and oxygen levels. Pond Sludge Remover uses concentrated beneficial bacteria and enzymes in individual water-soluble pouches to break it down naturally.

Drop a pouch into your pond and it fizzes to work, dispersing bacteria throughout the water column. No measuring, no mess. Best used as part of your seasonal maintenance routine rather than as an emergency fix.

Available as: Pond Sludge Remover Packs - 18 Pack

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

Pond Starter Bacteria

If you've just built a new pond or completed an annual clean-out, Pond Starter Bacteria is what gets the biological cycle going quickly. A new pond doesn't have an established bacteria colony yet - Pond Starter fast-tracks that process to prevent ammonia spikes, cloudy water, and early algae growth.

One pump treats 378L. Use it at startup, then transition to Maintain for Ponds for ongoing treatment.

Available as: Pond Starter Bacteria 473ml (pump bottle)

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

Beneficial Bacteria

A concentrated blend of naturally occurring bacteria strains for ongoing pond maintenance. Similar in purpose to Maintain for Ponds but in a more focused bacteria-only formula - no phosphate binder or flocculant, just bacteria and enzymes for breaking down waste and excess nutrients.

Available as: Beneficial Bacteria 473ml (pump bottle) | Beneficial Bacteria Concentrate 500g (dry formula, high potency, suits larger ponds)

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

Bacteria Bubble Tabs

Pre-measured effervescent beneficial bacteria tablets - drop one in and it fizzes to work, dispersing bacteria evenly throughout your pond. One tab treats 379L. A convenient format if you prefer not to measure liquid treatments.

Available as: Bacteria Bubble Tabs - 36 Pack

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

QuickFix Pond Gummy

A fast-acting all-in-one pond treatment in a dissolvable gummy format - no measuring, no mess. Packed with beneficial bacteria, enzymes and water conditioners. Each gummy treats 11,240L. Good to have on hand for a quick treatment when your pond needs a boost.

Available as: QuickFix Pond Gummy (single)

Fish safe: Yes | Plant safe: Yes | Wildlife safe: Yes

Pondless Waterfall Treatments

Pondless waterfalls use a different set of treatments since there are no fish or pond plants involved. All Southern Waterscapes pondless waterfall builds include an Aquascape auto-dosing system as standard, so the SL range applies here.

Clean for Fountains & Waterfalls SL

For pondless features that have fish or aquatic plants - cleans and clarifies using a fast-acting flocculant and phosphate binder. Fish safe and plant safe.

Available as: Clean for Fountains & Waterfalls SL 946ml (auto-dosing)

Prevent for Fountains & Waterfalls SL

For pondless features without fish or plants - prevents white scale buildup, foam, staining, and cloudy water. Run this consistently through the auto-dosing system for clear, low-maintenance water.

Note: Prevent is not safe for fish or plants - for features with aquatic planting that the water contacts, use Clean for Fountains & Waterfalls SL instead.

Available as: Prevent for Fountains & Waterfalls SL 946ml (auto-dosing)

Wildlife safe: Yes (birds and animals that drink from the feature)

The Auto-Dosing System - Worth It?

If you're manually dosing your pond treatments and finding it easy to forget, the Aquascape Automatic Dosing System SL is worth considering. It delivers the right amount of treatment twice daily, automatically - so your bacteria colony is supported consistently without you having to think about it.

The SL treatment range is formulated specifically for the dosing system and isn't available anywhere else in New Zealand. All Southern Waterscapes builds include the dosing system as standard, but it can also be retrofitted to existing ponds and water features.
